While the problems in the UK continue with rising costs of energy, 6 million NHS waiting
lists and a collapse in GP and emergency services, our Conservative government is indulging in a leadership contest that will decide the next PM. A decision made by only 200,000 Conservative party members giving the eventual winner practically no democratic mandate.
Whether the Tories should, or indeed should not have removed yet another PM and party leader is beyond the realms of this discussion - we all have our own views on that subject.
What is of major concern, is the fact that the entire function of government (or lack of perhaps?) has now been 'paused' until 'Ready4Rishi' Sunak or 'LizForLeader' Truss becomes the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
So, whilst the rest of the country is having to grapple with the rising cost of everyday goods, such as rocketing fuel costs, mortgages doubling in the space of only a few months and of course average gas and electricity costs increasing 700% since 2020, those charged with finding solutions, for what is quickly becoming an existential crisis for a growing number of the UK population, have for all intents and purposes gone AWOL.
The sheer gravity of the financial tsunami heading our way simply does not seem to have registered anywhere at a national governmental level.
Both Sunak and Truss were elected by their constituents local people they sought to serve. That effectively ended, the day they accepted the offer of working for the government as Ministers. The very moment an MP joins the payroll of the government, he or she is beholden to the person in charge; the Prime Minister.
Rightly or wrongly and regardless of whether it would be beneficial or not for the people who originally elected them, a newly promoted MP, supporting the government is all that matters.
In a truly democratic state, local councils would be given the power to run their own economies leaving national MPs like Sunak and Truss to concentrate on issue of national importance.
Instead, under our second demand ‘Real Local Democracy’ running the country would be covered by local politicians instead of the soap opera we see played out on our TV screens 24 hours a day.
Governance should be decided by the people, for the people. The six demands laid down within the Harrogate Agenda form a basic blueprint that's ready to go. All it requires is recognition and support by the people.
Help spread the word and let's start building a better future.
From Demand 3 "prime ministers shall be elected by popular vote;" One would think that this demand had already been enacted as we are subjected to this 'Presidential' election campaign every day. Meanwhile, as you state: "the entire function of government (or lack of perhaps?) has now been 'paused'.." plus we are shown the spectacle of the man drawing the PM's pay, partying and holidaying at our expense.
Also with a National police force seemingly out of control, arresting people for twitter comments and video logs that a single person didn't like, while real crime goes unobstructed, Demand 2 makes more and more sense. I would add that we need a Parish or local, police force, manned by local people with local knowledge patrolling local streets.
However, it is a big step to achieve "recognition and support by the people" of THA. Those I speak to are simply not interested. However, the time is coming, as you suggest, when people will revolt and will be looking for leadership.
